Gavin

I leave my bride in the house resting while I go out to chop some firewood for the stove. We’re off the grid, so I try to use as little power as possible so the generator always has plenty of juice for the lights, the fridge, and the hot water system. Those are the few luxuries I’m unwilling to give up. The rest, I can take it or leave it. There’s no cell service or Wi-Fi up here, and I haven’t had a television since Y2K was a concern, preferring books and music instead. But as I swing my ax, splitting block after block, I have to wonder if that will become an issue for Jolene. Currently, we’ve had no need for those things. We’ve been up here together two days now, and all we’re interested in is each other. My wife has an appetite for carnal pleasure that rivals my own. But in time, that crazy need we have for each other is going to fade. And then what? Will she realize my life and her life aren’t as compatible as she currently thinks? She’s young. And it’s possible she’s growing the seed of our child as we speak. Will this life away from life be enough for her? Am I robbing her of her best years?

I drop the ax into the chopping block and run a calloused hand through my ragged hair. My mind has always been my worst enemy, and now it’s got me doubting the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

Tugging my t-shirt over my head, I shove it in my back jeans pocket and return to splitting wood. Worrying over the future, five, ten, twenty years from now isn’t gonna do me any good. Right now, everything is perfect. I have my woman. I have my mountain life. And if I can just keep working on holding that peace inside me, focusing on and appreciating each moment as it comes, then whatever happens in the future, I’ll know I did my best to hold on to what matters. Love.

I feel her before I see her. She moves into my vision with a steaming mug in hand, wearing one of my flannels like it’s a dress. Her hair is out, and her cheeks are rosy. She holds the mug out to me.

“Thought you might like a drink. But now I wonder if I should have brought water instead.”

“Coffee’s perfect, sweetpea,” I say, taking the mug from her and gulping down the hot liquid. “Thank you.” I press a kiss on her cheek as I hand the mug back and work the ax back out of the block.

“You know, I’ve read books where the girl sits around watching her love interest swinging an ax, but I’ve never fully appreciated those scenes until right now.”

I grin and flex a little for her viewing pleasure. “Yeah?”

“Oh yeah. Give me some more.”

I make my pecs dance, and she giggles before it all gets too much and I’m on top of her, laying her on the soft grass as I make slow work of twisting each button on the shirt open.
